There are as many opinions about search engines as there are marketers.
Yes, they are important, but not enough to spend countless hours
a week trying to get into the top 10 - 20 on each engine. They
will only change within a few weeks.

A recent article from AP wire service describes how only 16% of
web sites are even in the most productive search engine. Yahoo
was a measley 8%, but what does that mean? Again, opinions vary.
Since many search engines spider a site, some feel only the listing
of the Home Page (most often index.htm or index.html) is all that
needs to be listed.
Others believe all pages should be listed. Some feel that search
engines will consider you spamming if you list every page, some
welcome it. Then theres the companies that say they will put
you into 500 + search engines. Sorry, there arent that many.
What they really mean is that they will place you in directories
and FFAs. FFA stands for Free For All. They are listings and
gatherings of listings. Helpful, yes; critical, no.

Just for fun, go to USAtoday.com and look up their advertising
rates. You will be stunned. Its obvious from the rates (if you
can figure them out) that only Fortune 500 companies can afford
it. And what guarantee is there? None, absolutely.
Standard media are valuable also and include newspapers, radio,
television, direct mail, and others. Again, no guarantees and
they can be quite expensive.
So what is a small business to do? There are many positive and
inexpensive marketing techniques. Each has their own sets of rules,
so lets talk about the easiest and cheapest first. It is also
probably one of the best.
